Alex MADEMOCHORITIS Volumetric climate-controlled urbanism: issues, instruments and international circulations of a new modality of urban production

His background
I received a bachelor's degree in interior architecture and design from the University of Western Attica in Athens, Greece, and a Master in City & Technology from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC) and the Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC) in Barcelona, Spain. I joined LATTS as a doctoral student in November 2023 as part of the CLEAR-Doc program (MSCA-COFUND).

Key facts
I’m Greek-French. I lived for 7 years in Barcelona, working at IAAC, a private institute focused on education, research, and development of new technologies for architecture, cities, and the built environment. My roles there were primarily in academic coordination and admissions management. During my mobility at IAAC, I was also involved for a total of 3 years in various teaching and research activities as a member of the Advanced Architecture Group (AAG), an interdisciplinary group studying emerging information, interaction, and fabrication technologies for city design and planning. Outside of research, I have also created and host a podcast called "The Masterplan" (currently on Spotify and Apple Podcasts), where we discuss various topics related to cities, culture, society, and technology.

Summary of his thesis
My research focuses on the social aspects of urban heat management in Paris and is done under the supervision of Jonathan Rutherford and Martine Drozdz. I question whether Urban Heat Mitigation and Adaptation (UHMA) systems have the potential to catalyse the enhancement of social and community cohesion. In order to address this question, I look into the technical solutions, economic investment, social participation and policy formulation associated with UHMA systems.

What's next?
After CLEAR-Doc I plan to enter the world of consultancy and work with governments and local authorities on just climate mitigation policies and urban planning. I also intend to continue conducting socio-technical research and expand on the work I do with my podcast. I want my career to remain at the intersection of industry, research and communication.
