Irène SITOHANG New assessment methodology of urban redevelopment design for better interconnection of cycle and pedestrian networks along the dock sides of a waterway

Her background
I did my bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering at Diponegoro University (Indonesia). In the final year of my studies, I spent one year at Hanze University of Applied Sciences (the Netherlands) as a double degree student. My thesis focused on the design of high-quality bicycle path. As transport is something that I want to focus on in my career, I enrolled in master’s degree in Transportation Sciences at Hasselt University (Belgium). It rounded up my knowledge by exploring the social aspect of transportation. My thesis focused on understanding the effect of road safety education gamification programme for students.

Key facts
I love cycling as transport mode and walking is my sport, so I am quite lucky that I get to do research about cycling and walking for my PhD project! In my spare time, I love travelling. My first solo international travel was actually to Paris (back in 2016) and little did I know that I now get to go to Paris whenever I want.

Summary of her thesis
My thesis explores the interaction between cyclists and pedestrians on shared path by considering aspects such as road users’ perception and behaviour, road design, and urban area characteristics. The goal is to improve their travelling experience and encourage more active mobility use.

What's next?
For me, doing research at university is a passion, so I hope to continue my career in Academia. After three years of PhD, I will have research experience on my topic, but I know that research on active mobility is quite large in scope. So, I also look forward to expand my experience in other related topics.
