Lama AYAD Consideration of the characteristics of the infrastructure for the development of a driver assistance system for bicycles

Her background
Lebanese Civil Engineer with 6+ years research and professional experience in planning, modelling, management, risk assessment, and mobility safety. Recognized consistency for
performance excellence and successful projects completion. Participated in planning and delivering one of massive events in the world (FIFA World Cup 2022) on crowd control topic in order to provide a smooth, safe and comfortable journey for spectators during their ingress and egress of the stadiums. I was always planning on starting a PhD program because it represents my best professional and personal interest. Therefore, I am grateful for being accepted in the PhD position and to be involved in the research field.

Key facts
Motivated Engineer who I have a passion for finding solutions to grant a safe society and need to put my experience and passion to come up with a safer bicyclist environment.
Ambitious driven to grab work opportunities for society improvement, and will take this unique research opportunity to be part and collaborator in enhancing the mobility safety.

Summary of her thesis
People worldwide are increasingly bicycling to commute, to exercise, to overcome the inflation. However, bicyclists are vulnerable road users because they are significantly more likely to be killed or injured while riding, compared to other road users. A safe bicycling environment should be sought so that people of all ages can feel comfortable while riding the bicycle. Focusing on safety risks that bicyclists may encounter while riding is the key to preserving their safety, and reducing the accidents occurred. Therefore, the PhD thesis aims to maintain the safety of bicyclists during their journey riding travel by formulating a risk index and developing a real time warning alert and control system accordingly to inform the bicyclist in order to take safety measures/decisions while approaching an area with a high-risk index within a road segment, taking into consideration his/her current speed. This alert and control system will be validated by conducting virtual simulations on the bicycle simulator (France) and real road experiments using an instrumented bicycle (Italy) and to investigate the behaviour of the cyclists in interaction with the infrastructure and other road users.

What's next?
I am looking forward to complete the PhD successfully and get benefit from the enriching clear doc program. This PhD will prepare me for tackling two-career paths such as an applied researcher by providing consultancy research in this topic in France especially and Europe in general, or giving academic courses in the university and sharing the acquired knowledge.
