Lorenzo CASTI Semi-probabilistic assessment of existing urban structures to climate change

My name is Lorenzo Casti and I am from Sardinia, Italy. I am 27 years old and my cat is Neko.

His background
My bachelor degree focused on Civil Engineering at the Univerisity of Cagliari, where became more aware of civil engineering and its strong connection with sustainable development. Since then, having an active part in the sustainable development has always been one of my goals in life. After my bachelor degree, I enrolled at Politecnico di Milano in the master’s degree in Structural engineering. At the same time, I had also the possibility to enroll in the HONOURS PROGRAMME “Engineering for Sustainable Development”. It was parallel educational path for passionate students aimed to increase the systematic and transversal skills, preparing the attendees to deal with the global challenges by means of technical and theoretical competences concerning a sustainable development.

Key facts
I love travelling and I had the possibility to make different international experiences for my studies.  I spent on year in the Kaunas University of technology (Lithuania) and 6 months in the ETH Zürich (Switzerland) and these experiences were really life changing. During these experiences, I met different people from all around the world and I felt really enriched while discovering their culture. I like to practice sports, especially to play football, and to hike in the nature. In my free time I enjoy reading manga e watching series. I am very glad to have been a volunteer in the Erasmus Student Network (ESN), a non-profit organization with the mission of “students helping students” during their period abroad.

Summary of his thesis
My research project is named “Semi-probabilistic assessment of existing urban structures to climate change”. It aims to study and propose suitable methodologies for civil engineering practitioners to assess the performance of existing structures considering the impact of climate change. Eventually, the aim is to contribute to the sustainable development of climate-resilient civil structures and infrastructure facilities and the welfare of society.

What's next?
On the next three years I will be researching at Université Gustave Eiffel within the CLEAR-DOC Project. Parallelly, I would like to learn French and to explore France. I believe that this will be an opportunity to build a network with a lot of researchers around the world and to enrich my personal knowledge.
